West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker expressed his enthusiasm for the new Labour government’s budget, stating that it aligns with his own vision for the region. The budget includes significant funding for key areas such as transport, housing, jobs, and growth. The Autumn Statement confirmed that the West Midlands, along with Greater Manchester, will be the first mayoral authorities to receive an integrated settlement in April 2025, worth hundreds of millions of pounds. This funding will grant the Mayor and local authorities greater control over how the money is allocated.

In addition to the integrated settlement, the budget also allocates funds for various projects in the region. This includes funding for the Black Country Metro tram extension, support for vital bus routes, additional funding for the Affordable Homes Programme, and investment in the ‘Get Britain Working’ package. The confirmation that HS2 will now connect the West Midlands directly to London Euston was also welcomed, along with further support for the region’s Innovation Accelerator.

Mayor Parker emphasized the importance of the budget in addressing the needs of the West Midlands community. He highlighted the investment in good jobs, affordable housing, efficient transportation, and overall economic growth. The budget also supports his Youth Plan, aimed at ensuring every young person is either earning or learning, as well as boosting the automotive and innovation sectors in the region.

The completion of the Black Country tram extension was noted as a personal priority for Mayor Parker, and he expressed his satisfaction with the funding allocated for this project. The improved connectivity through HS2 is expected to bring about new opportunities and drive economic growth across the region.

Looking ahead, Mayor Parker reiterated his commitment to delivering real jobs, affordable housing, economic growth, and better public transport for the people of the West Midlands. He expressed confidence in the budget’s ability to address these local priorities and provide a solid foundation for future growth in the region. Additionally, he mentioned plans to work closely with government departments and local authorities to maximize the benefits of the resources available for the people of the West Midlands.
