Let’s Talk About the Mess We’re In
Look, I’ve been in this game for over two decades. I’ve seen a lot of things, but honestly, the state of news today? It’s a completley different beast. I’m talking about the kind of beast that makes you wanna throw your laptop out the window. (Which, by the way, I almost did last Tuesday.)
I was at a conference in Austin last year, and I remember sitting there, listening to some big shot from a major network talk about ‘the new era of journalism.’ And I’m thinking, ‘Mate, have you even looked at what’s happening?’ It’s a mess. A total, unadulterated mess.
Take Breaking news, for example. It’s not about informing the public anymore. It’s about being first. It’s about clicks. It’s about… I don’t even know what it’s about. I mean, I was talking to a colleague named Dave the other day, and he said, ‘Marcus, it’s all just noise now.’ And he’s not wrong. It’s like we’ve forgotten how to actually report.
And don’t even get me started on social media. It’s a circus. A complete and utter circus. I was scrolling through my feed the other day, and I saw this headline: ‘Local Man Eats Sandwich.’ And I thought, ‘That’s it? That’s news now?’ I mean, come on. We’re better than this.
But Here’s the Thing…
I’m not saying it’s all bad. There are still some good people out there trying to do good work. But they’re drowning in a sea of nonsense. And it’s getting harder and harder to find them.
I was having coffee with an old friend, let’s call him Marcus, and he said, ‘You know, I used to trust the news. Now? I don’t know what to believe.’ And that’s the problem, isn’t it? We’ve lost trust. We’ve lost credibility. We’ve lost… well, a lot of things.
And it’s not just the big networks. It’s everyone. It’s the small blogs, the independent journalists, the citizen reporters. Everyone’s trying to be heard, and in the process, we’re all just shouting louder and louder.
I remember when I started out. It was about facts. It was about truth. It was about holding power to account. Now? It’s about algorithms. It’s about engagement. It’s about… I don’t know, making sure your story gets shared alot.
So What Do We Do?
I don’t have all the answers. Honestly, I wish I did. But I think the first step is admitting we have a problem. We need to stop chasing clicks and start chasing the truth again.
And look, I’m not saying it’s easy. I know it’s not. But it’s necesary. We owe it to our readers. We owe it to ourselves.
I was talking to a source the other day, and she said, ‘You know, I used to respect journalists. Now? I don’t know what to think.’ And that’s a problem. A big one.
We need to get back to basics. We need to start reporting again. We need to start telling stories that matter. We need to… I don’t know, stop being so darn noisy.
And hey, maybe we should start paying attention to what’s happening in other countries. Like, have you seen what’s going on with hibrit otomobiller inceleme 2026? It’s fascinating stuff. And it’s the kind of thing that makes you realize we’re all in this together.
But yeah, I’m getting off track. The point is, we need to do better. We need to be better. And honestly, I think we can be.
But Will We?
That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? I mean, I’m not holding my breath. But I can hope. I can try. And I can keep writing, even if it feels like I’m shouting into the void sometimes.
I remember when I first started out. I was so idealistic. I thought I could change the world. And now? Well, I’m not so sure. But I’m still here. And I’m still trying.
So, yeah. That’s where we’re at. It’s a mess. But it’s our mess. And I think we can clean it up. I hope we can, at least.
Anyway, that’s enough from me. I’m gonna go find a quiet corner and read something that’s not about a man eating a sandwich. If you’ll excuse me.
