FIFA is considering making changes to the VAR system that could benefit Premier League clubs. Currently, only referees can use VAR, but FIFA is thinking about allowing coaches to challenge decisions themselves. This new system, called Football Video Support (FVS), has been trialled at the U20 and U17 FIFA Women’s World Cups and has received positive feedback. If approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), coaches would be able to make up to two challenges per match if they believe a mistake has been made. The referee would then review the incident on the side of the pitch without any prior indication of an error. This system is designed for leagues with limited resources, using no more than four cameras. FIFA’s referees’ committee chairman, Pierluigi Collina, believes that the FVS system could be implemented in more competitions in the future based on the positive feedback received so far. The outcome of the trial will be presented at the next IFAB ABM meeting, and if approved, several competitions could start using FVS next year. This potential change in the VAR system could have a significant impact on how matches are officiated in the future.
